On September 9, 2024, the History students of class XII A of Humanities from Unity College embarked on a fascinating educational excursion to the UP State Archives, located in Mahanagar Extension, Lucknow. Under the guidance of their History teacher, Mr Mohd Mohiuddin, this visit deepened their understanding of India’s rich historical legacy.
The trip began with a tour of the library, where students marvelled at artefacts and original literary works spanning Ancient, Medieval, and Modern history. They then gained special access to an exclusive section housing record rooms and a deacidification chamber. Here, they learnt about the meticulous methods used to preserve vital handwritten documents, including the application of silica gel and the use of specialised tissue papers for lamination. Among the many highlights was the original 1871 Map of Lucknow, showing the 82 mohallas (localities) that once existed. Equally captivating was the original telegram that conveyed the tragic news of Rani LaxmiBai’s death.
The day’s most poignant moment came during an exhibition dedicated to India’s Freedom Struggle. Students were moved by the collection of historical documents, photographs, and artefacts, each telling a story of sacrifice, valour, and patriotism. The exhibition vividly depicted the indomitable spirit of the freedom fighters, evoking deep respect and admiration from all present.
The students expressed their gratitude to Archivist Mr Amitabh Pandey along with Mr Anjini Kumar Tripathi, Mr Shiv Kumar Yadav and Mr Vijay Srivastava, for sharing their invaluable knowledge. Special thanks were also extended to Principal Mr Deepak Mathews and Vice Principal Mr Sachindra Bharti for supporting and organising such a meaningful educational experience.
This visit left an indelible mark on students' minds, fostering a greater appreciation for sacrifices made by those who shaped India’s destiny.
