On September 4 and 6, 2024, the Primary Section of the College convened counselling sessions for students of classes IV and V, focusing on various aspects of personal development and wellbeing for both boys and girls. Both sessions were led by Headmistress Ms Kainaat Mansoor.
The girls’ counselling session on September 4 addressed several important topics. It began with discussions on maintaining good personal hygiene and managing hygiene during menstruation, offering practical advice for comfort and cleanliness. Ms Mansoor explained what menstruation is and provided guidance on coping strategies. The session also covered healthy eating habits, both with and without menstruation, and emphasised the importance of respectful behaviour in the classroom. Self-defence techniques were introduced, teaching girls how to respond if they notice someone following them or if they encounter suspicious individuals. Additionally, the session explored the physical and emotional changes during puberty and offered advice on the wise use of cellphones, advising against platforms like Snapchat and Instagram.
The boys’ counselling session on September 6, also led by Ms Mansoor, began with warm-up exercises to engage the students and set a positive tone for the discussion. The session then focused on the importance of a healthy sleep schedule, encouraging students to get at least 8 hours of sleep and wake up early for Fajr prayers. Personal hygiene, including daily bathing and cleanliness, was emphasised. Ms Mansoor discussed the health risks of staying up late and the Islamic teachings on preserving one’s health. She advised students on effective time management and addressed concerns raised in a survey, which revealed that many Muslim boys were not dedicating enough time to their studies. The session also focused on preventing and reporting bullying, maintaining school property, and ensuring washroom cleanliness. Social media safety was addressed, advising caution with personal details and avoiding gossip. Practical advice included keeping uniforms clean, having proper haircuts, and having a wholesome breakfast before coming to school.
Both sessions were designed to provide students with essential information and skills, promoting responsible behaviour, personal growth, and safety, and preparing them to handle various aspects of their lives with confidence and maturity.
