Urdu has been widely recognised as one of the sweetest languages of the world. Spoken by more than a 100 million people, its literature is rich with a plethora of genres, and enjoyed by notonly the Urdu speakers but people at large.
Every academic year of Unity College is marked with the Annual Urdu Programme on a different theme and style. This year the literary programme encompassed four contests - Quiz, Speech, Script Reading and Bait Baazi. The preliminary rounds of all the events were conducted a couple of days prior to the final day.
On the final day of 23rdDecember, 2021, an assemblage of distinguished literary personalities were welcomed by Principal Mr. Francis Castelino. Chief Guest Mr. Athar Sagheer Zaidi, Chairman Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Memorial Committee and a renowned social activist, graced the occasion with his benign presence. Mr. Zaidi announced his generous pursuit to rename a road near Era Medical College as Dr. Kalbe Sadiq Road and to build a main gate near Unity College in his memory. He also said that we should take forward his vision and change the College into a University.
Renowned Writer, Critic and founder of academic institutions, Janab Sharib Rudaulvi highly appreciated the remarkable performance of the students. At the same moment, he shed light on the significance of co-curricular activities and that such forums are necessary to learn correct pronunciation, annotation, expression and other nuances of literature. He said the meticulous performance of the students is the testimony of good teachers and a good College.
The members of the jury for the occasion were renowned poet Mrs. Hina Haider Rizvi, Mrs. Asmat Jahan -Teacher, TaleemghaNiswan, Mr. KarrarAsghar Zaidi- Manager, Unity I.T. I. and distinguished Urdu poet Mr. Basheer-ul- Hasan Khan.
The distinguished guests, Prof. Anees Ashfaq- Ex-Head of Urdu Department, LU, Prof. Sabira Habib- Ex-Head of Urdu Department, LU and Mr. Makhmoor Kakorvi - esteemed poet also graced the occasion.
At the onset, the soulful divine renditions of the Quran, the Gita and the Bible set the tone of the literary feast. The enthusiastic participation of both the Shifts of Unity College made the event enthralling. Wara Fatima,Nashra Fatima, Baseerat Fatima and Hal Ata Abbas presented their views in a mesmerizing manner on the topic ‘MeerAnis Ki ShaeriKe Fanni Mahasin’, punctuated with his lovely, picturesque poetry. Their enchanting delivery spell bound one and all. It was interspersed with the heart touching, mellifluous poetry of Allama Iqbal by Zehra Moosvi, Baseerat Fatima and Hal Ata Abbas who have been some of the shortlisted eight students of Unity College in the online ‘Yaum-e-Iqbal InamiMuqabala, Bazme Urdu, Dubai.
The cynosure of the programme was Bait Baazi. Excitement was writ large as the participants presented one after another, couplets of great poets to continue the contest. The captivating exchange of gripping couplets between Team Mirza Ghalib of Unity College and Team Faiz Ahmed Faiz of Unity College II Shift set the stage for the 1stand 2nd place in which Team Faiz Ahmed Faiz was announced the winner. Team Meer Taqi Meer was adjudged at the3rd place after a close contest with Team Meer Hasan.
In the Speech Contest, Baseerat Fatima bagged the 1stplace, followed by Hal Ata Abbas and Nashra Fatima as the 1stand the 2nd Runners up. In the Script Reading, the 1stprize was clinched by Butool Uzma, the 2nd prize shared by Fatima Rizvi and Kulsoom Fatima while the 3rdby Muskan Fatima. In the Quiz Contest Yasar Abbas and Ali Jafar jointly received the 1stprize while Mohd. Aqib and Wajeeha Zehra, the2nd and 3rdprizes.
The Literary Treat culminated witha vote of thanks by College Jt. Secretary Mr. M. Talha. He concluded with a kind wish for the growth and enrichment of Urdu Language.
